Naps, Bagels, and Naming What You Love

On naming what you love

“Would it be wrong to say ‘cookie’?” asked bear.

“It seems to me,” replied bird, “it would be wrong not to.”

I love the smell of a good bagel. What do you love?

Every morning, when it’s still dark outside, I wait for my O’Doughs’ gluten-free, vegan bagel to pop, holding the two toasted halves up to my nose and inhaling deeply.

Silly as it may sound, this brings me joy, every single day.

What do you love?

I love the feel of cold fall air on my warm skin, wet grass under my bare feet, and the sound of Stevie’s little paws click-clacking on the hardwood floors.

I love the quiet, and unexpected naps, and Ara when she can’t stop laughing.

I love the time between sunset and dark, crows flying west to settle in for the night, and getting lost in Murukami or LeGuin.

What do you love?

Seriously, what do you love?

What are you willing to do to protect it?

I love my family, my daily freedoms, my rights as an American, my access to safe healthcare, and living in a country governed by laws that state all people are created equal.

What do you love?

What will you to do to protect it? What will you do to help others protect what they love?

In the coming days, weeks, and months, this is the question we will be asked again and again and again.

Together, we will stand for what we love. But first, we each need to ask ourselves what that is; what it is we really and truly love – in our own lives, in our America.

What is one thing you love with all your heart?
